A lot has happened in the last month

We left Texas for CA, driving the northern route this time, after stopping at my mom's house. We went through Lubbock, and stopped by the old TI plant where we met. It now has many businesses located in the several modules. We spent the night in Albuquerque, at the La Quinta again, 'they know us there' [no, not because of anything bad the poopers did!]. The next day we stopped at the Gallup, NM airport to say hello to Jim, who helped Bud when the Aerostar lost the engine last year. This is a giant pot on the main street, the old Route 66.

Then, on to Kingman for the night and dinner at a neat restaurant, Mattina's- good Italian food in the old part of town. We talked to the singer, Bud Cooper, who gave us a nice cd of his work of mellow blues tunes. The only problem we had on the whole trip was when we tried to stop at Anderson's Pea Soup for a bowl before going into the Santa Clara valley, it was closed! Seems there were water main problems in the area, and all the restaurants were closed! Major Bummer! We really had our mouths set for some split pea soup.

Shannon and I had been planning to hike a section of the Appalachian Trail with Adventures in Good Company, a group that arranges trips for women. The segment of the we would hike was in the southern part of VA, by Mt. Rogers in the Lewis Fork Wilderness. Shannon did all of the preparation, gathering supplies and gear for us over the last year. We were supposed to be exercising with our packs since we would be carrying 30 pounds of personal and group gear for about a week. So, the two weeks before, I took the poopers on daily walks with my backpack loaded with 10 pounds of sugar, plus two phone books and my sleeping bag. It was not too bad, the backpack did its job by transferring the weight to my hips. The poopers liked it as I didn't miss a day of walks, trying to get in some shape to make the hike.

So we took a red-eye to Pittsburg on the 6th, arriving early the next day, and headed south to the farm in WV, with stops at a Starbucks in Washington, PA. We were tired when we arrived, so we told Annie to go back to bed and we took a nap. Shannon had a good time, eating WV hot dogs at the Ritzy Cafe, shipping hot dogs to CA, petting barn cats [Annie takes care of 4 or 5], meeting Bud's side of the family- AnnaLee who lives on the farm, her son Don, his wife Lisa and their two kids, KayLee and Dee - for the first time, and touring Weston. This image shows the kids, playing with their mom. They reminded me of puppies, happy, sweet puppies with lots of energy. We had a nice visit over the two days we were there.
