It is a rainy day here in the Hill Country

We have had rain and thunderstorms for the last several days, enough to cancel my first dual cross country on Monday. We need the rain but I really want to get this first trip out of the way so I can do the solo cross country. It is on the calendar for tomorrow am but it looks a bid dicey right now. It isn't a long trip, around 120 miles each leg, from Fredericksburg to San Angelo. I just don't want to have it be bumpy with lots of thermals. I have done all the planning, except for current weather. I'll do that tomorrow early [EARLY, around 6am]. ugh. I hope there is a Starbux in the San Angelo terminal. heh For the meantime, I am studying for the written exam I must take before taking the practical test with an FAA examiner. I am taking practice tests on-line at Sporty's. My instructor said that I would be ready to take the written when I started making over 90% all the time [I made my first 92 today].

I didn't post anything about my brother's visit in February, so I'll just put one picture up now. Gary and Donna and Brandon, their youngest boy who goes to school in San Marcos came here for a weekend. We did the usual stuff, but there was a chocolate festival at Becker Vinyards! Donna and I loved it! This image is of Gary and Donna at Beckers, having cheese and crackers with some wine and chocolate truffles. Yum.

Gary made dinner one night, a wonderful Duck Gumbo. Bud had 3 huge bowls, it was great. The kitchen was a mess as there was one cook, Gary, and 3 helpers, Donna, Brandon and me. We had a great time during their visit.

Things are fine here, but Sophie had a little accident the other day. The horses were romping around near our fence, so we walked out to play with them. As usual, Jack and Sophie got excited and were running close to the fence. Sophie kept trying to sniff and lick the horses, barking and jumping around. One horse, JR, was roaring around and even kicked the fence at them. Later in the evening, Bud noticed a couple of bloody spots on Sophie's side and neck. She must have gotten up against the barbed wire. One spot was actually a dime-sized hole in her skin. We put antibiotic salve on it and it seems to be healing ok. She doesn't seem to even notice it. I think Labs are immune to pain, except for stickers in their paws. I now keep a small comb in my pocket to help get them out. This tip was from our neighbor, Bonnie, who has the five horses and 4 dogs [and a few chickens]. Thanks!

Smokey is doing fine, she is deciding she likes it here, and now is marking the corners, doors, etc... with her snoot. She continues to roar up the stairs and over the dogs to the bed, then under the covers every night. But now, she sleeps on the chair by the window if it is warm. Bud makes her a little nest with his clothes every night, just in case she wants to sleep there. He said she weighs a ton, and she usually sleeps on his legs! She does have an 'unusually stable base'. The 'brick wrapped in silk' is such an apt description of her.

One last thing! The bluebonnet seeds we planted over winter are coming up and some are starting to bloom. They are really pretty even now with just a few blooms. We can hardly wait until all the plants bloom. I'll post pictures when that happens, likely next week. There are hundreds of little plants out there. It should be spectacular!
